Journey of the Leaf

Journey of the Leaf

(One person enters. Stands at the front of the stage.)

(Character 1 gradually grows softer throughout the play)

Character 1: Down. Falling down. For all eternity, falling down. The never ending journey to the ground, for all eternity, falling down.

(One person enters and sits down in the pit)

Character 2: I love autumn. The leaves are so beautiful when their colors change.

Character 1: Down. Falling down. For all eternity, falling down. The never ending journey to the ground, for all eternity, falling down.

Character 2: If I were a leaf, how would it feel? Would I know how it felt? Could I feel the breeze drifting me every which way? Turning me around? Could I tell the difference between up and down? What would happen when I hit the ground? Would it be painful, would it be gentle? What would the life of a leaf be?

Character 1: Down. Falling down. For all eternity, falling down. The never ending journey to the ground, for all eternity, falling down.

Character 2: I think it would be fun. It would be a never ending cycle, from a growing bud, to the full grown leaf, then donning a different dress, of orange, yellow, brown, or red. I would fall gracefully and become a fertilizer for the tree to help my siblings grow into the large family I once had. If only my life was that simple, as a leaf.

Character 1: Down. Falling down. For all eternity, falling down. The never ending journey to the ground, for all eternity, falling down.

Character 2: But, what of death? Does a leaf have the same restrictions, or is a leaf never aware of the end? Can a leaf feel the sorrow of this end; does it know that its final hour is coming? How easy, for the leaf, to be always in a blissful oblivion, never having to worry about anything other than falling down, to the ground.

Character 1: Down. Falling down. For all eternity, falling down. The never ending journey to the ground, for all eternity, falling down. (Sits down at the front of the stage, voice softest of all) Down. On the ground. Eternity ended, on the ground. Journey passed, eternity ended, on the ground, no longer falling down to the ground.
