Suzy's First Word

Setting: in a kitchen

Characters: Mom, Dad, and Baby (Suzy)

Suzy’s First Word

Mom is sitting in the kitchen feeding the baby, repeating the word mama.

Dad walks in the room.

Dad: What are you doing? Are you trying to cheat? Our bet is whose name the baby will say as her first word, mama or dada.

Mom looks at dad with shock.

Mom: No! Beside even if I was, I see you doing it all the time. I am evening the playing field and it is commonly known that babies have more of a connection with their mothers, so you should just give up now!

Mom and Dad stare at each other, both with a determined look.

The Baby start to make noise, both parents look intensely at the baby.

Baby: mmmm…aaaa…

Mom: Yes! Mama, say Mama Suzy!

Dad: No Dada, Suzy Dada!

Baby looks around and is silent.

Mom: Look what you have done! She was just about to say my name!

Dad: No she was just making noise, that’s what babies do. She was not saying a word!

Baby starts to make noise again; parents turn their attention to the child.

Baby: dddd…aaaa…

Mom looks upset and starts to feed the baby again.

Dad kneels down to the baby, and starts to mouth dada.

Dad: She is going to say my name, you heard her!

Mom laughs.

Mom stops feeding the baby and turns to Dad.

Mom says still chuckling: I thought that Suzy was just making noises!

Dad says in a smug voice: that was more than just a noise that was almost a word!

Mom rolls her eyes and turns towards the baby.

Mom: Yeah, okay.

Baby: Daaa…

Dad looks excited.

Dad: Yes Suzy Dada!

Baby: ...mmmmm…

Mom: Mama, Suzy Mama!

Baby: dddd…aaaa…mmm…nnnn,

Baby looks happy and says again: dd…aa…mm…nn, damn!

Parents look at each other in bewilderment and are silent for a few seconds.

Father finally turns to Mother and says: did you just hear what I heard?

Mom looks upset and says: our baby’s first word was damn!

Curtain closes.
