Hawken Dating: The Mathletes

Characters- young girl and boy mathletes

Setting- Math offices

Note the answers are highlighted and should not be read.

Girl is sitting down at a desk and is working studiously on her Advanced Math homework

Boy walks into the room and casually sits down across from her calculator, paper and pencil in hand

Girl looks up and looks down, boy looks up then looks down, both characters look up at each other, boy winks at girl who is now blushing and looks down with a sly smile.

Boy passes over a note on his calculator

The girl reads (aside) the note: Can I have your number please

Girl replies by typing 1/0

Boy turns to the audience and says- 1/0, Undefined?!

Boy turns attention back to girl and says- Can I please have you number? (in a slightly desperate voice)

Girl shoots him a wily look and replies- ok

Girl begins to write on the smart or chalkboard, what the boy assumes to be the number

When finished writing she sits down with a smirk and begins goes back to her homework

The boy gets and gets up and looks at the chalk board with a puzzled expression and begins to solve the problems

1st couple problems- 2x=6 (3), ½x=sqr (4) (4), cos (0) (1).

Boy replies with a grin- I got this, 341

2nd set of problems

Sqr(2*4*8)= xcos(360)=(8)

Graph the equation sin(x)=y and add the x-intercepts together for one period and then take the sin(of that number) (0)

The fifth decimal in pie (9)

(without the boy noticing the girl now quietly packs up and leaves the room)

3rd set of problem

Find the absolute value of x+y for the intersecting point of the two lines: y= 4x+12 and Y= 3x+8 (8)

The number not included in the domain of 1/x=y (0)

Find the diameter of a circle whose center is at (7, 6) and goes through the point (10, 6). Then using the diameter find the circumference of the circle and take the third and fourth digits of the circumference as the sixth and seventh digits of my number respectively. (8 & 4)

After figuring out the last two digits the boy immediately jumps and while turning to confirm with the girl (by shouting the number) that the number is 341-809-8084.

As doing this he realizes that she has left the room and immediately gets out his phone, dials her number with an overwhelmingly anxious smile.

The play ends with a dial tone going to a voicemail of the girl saying:

“Congratulations on figuring out my phone number! I am happy to say, if you are getting this then you are the first boy smart enough to date me, leave a message with your number and I’ll be more than happy to call you back! P.S. I’m only in advanced math so keep the math fair!”

The End.

  1. Clever idea, but the advanced math may be too advanced to keep the interest of our audience.
