Play One

[A director and a woman are sitting in chairs facing a girl standing in front of them.]

Woman: Ok, go ahead whenever you’re ready.

[Girl expressively presents short monologue (Shakespeare or something else)]

[Director without looking up shakes his head]

Woman [looking at director]: Thank you

[Next actor walks in and gives an equally good monologue while woman nods in acceptance]

Director [without looking up shakes his head]

Woman [looking at director and scowling, then looks up, sort of smiles]: Thank you very much

[Next actor walks in and stands there. 15 seconds later he crosses his arms. 30 seconds later he takes an iPod and puts the headphones in his ears. Director looks up in confusion. Slowly he starts to smile, stands up, and extends his arms forward toward the actor]

Director: Brilliant.
